JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State is seeking a candidate for the position of Assistant Preparator . Reporting to the Chief Preparator, the Assistant Preparator is responsible for assisting with exhibition installation and collections care. These responsibilities include handling, packing, framing, lighting, and installation, all to the highest museum standards. Other responsibilities include documentation of art movements and storage locations, updating departmental inventories, and maintaining gallery and back of house areas including wood shop, storage room, and loading dock. Experience in art handling, preparation, and installation is required. Must be a team player, with a high attention to detail and strong communication skills.

The Museum Preparator facilitates the development and presentation of exhibitions; responsibilities include development, preparation, and installation of permanent collection displays and temporary exhibitions. This position also implements and manages projects in collaboration with scientists, researchers, and facilities coordinators.

  • Direct the design, fabrication, and installation of art exhibits

  • Evaluate exhibition site conditions, create construction documents, develop systems and procedures

  • Provide cost estimates and purchase materials to support exhibitions

  • Conduct project planning and scheduling; coordinate installations and traveling exhibitions by supervising tasks with internal and external partners

  • Perform various gallery maintenance functions to ensure proper upkeep of the facility

  • Communicate and coordinate logistics and details with facilities, Office of the Physical Plant, and other partners to ensure projects are compliant with code, ADA, fire safety, and/or other safety concerns

  • Provide strategic advice and guidance related to the maintenance of exhibits and art pieces

  • Research new materials, production techniques, and technical advances

  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$42,100.00 - $61,000.00
