CBC News Network is seeking a Senior Producer to lead the planning, conception, gathering and production of live and breaking news on the weekends (on-air Saturday 1600-2330 and Sunday 1500-2100).

With superior leadership and critical thinking skills, you ensure journalistic accuracy, balance and fairness, and compelling visual direction on a range of national and international stories. As a clear communicator, you make decisions and provide editorial guidance in line with the CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices and the overall CBC News strategy.

Control room skills and experience in an automated environment are essential for this position. You work under pressure with grace, communicate effectively, and have a firm grasp of all technical and workflow ramifications when dealing with lineups that change by the second.

You help drive the editorial agenda by prioritizing the audience’s needs and champion inclusive programming and treatments that serve contemporary Canada. You inspire others to do the same. This position involves planning and contributing to network coverage and requires outstanding news judgement.

You plan, direct, and co-ordinate the work of others including writers, producers, editors, and hosts, and play a critical role in managing their performance. As a team leader, you give meaningful feedback, foster creativity and demonstrate the desire and ability to mentor others and encourage open discussions.

You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Based in Toronto, this is a permanent full-time position, compressed four days per week (Thursday to Sunday), and requires weekend evening shifts.

Key Tasks

  • Develop network news programming that reflects the people of Canada and advances the news agenda

  • Ensure all resources are allocated against strategic priorities.

  • Determine the look, feel, style, pace, lineup and format of the network program against established criteria and values.

  • Help guide and support staff through change.

  • Support team development and ongoing staff feedback.

  • Vet story ideas, pitches and scripts to meet the JSP and best practices.

  • As required, commissions writing and/or research. Prepare and edit scripts.

  • Plan, select and request financial and production/resource requirements.

  • Make editorial decisions.

  • Evaluate all facets of the show including the performance of program and production personnel, and freelance contributors and provide feedback and support.

Skills and qualifications

  • Seven years of daily news experience, of which three must involve work in broadcasting and control rooms.

  • Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an aptitude for pacing, tone, presentation and production.

  • Experience in developing and producing live breaking news coverage.

  • Superior writing, editorial and production skills.

  • University degree or equivalent.

  • Flexibility and adaptability, able to cope with new demands and platforms (streaming, social, digital).

  • Proven track record of taking initiative when it comes to improving programming and workflow processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan ahead, ensuring that proper resources and staff are in place.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of national and international news.

  • Ability to prioritize relevant, audience-focused stories.

  • Excellent news judgment, responsiveness, and ability to work effectively under 24/7 online newsroom deadline pressure.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience taking programs to air in an automated control room.

  • Highly developed production skills, including strong ability to produce a variety of program formats.

  • Skill and experience on technical systems such as Ross Overdrive, DTV, iNews toolbar.

  • Broad range of interests and knowledge, such as politics, business, science, sports, entertainment, pop culture, technology and health and medicine.

  • Demonstrated desire and ability to supervise people and proactively give daily, ongoing feedback to team members.

  • Experience working with a host, providing guidance and meaningful feedback.

  • Demonstrated desire and ability to mentor team members.

  • Flexibility to work a range of shifts and overtime as required.
