About the role:

This position is for an entry level field technician working for ALS Environmental out of the Rochester laboratory. We are looking for a full time, permanent addition, who works well in a team setting and an ever-changing environment.The main focus of the field team is to manage sampling events in order to obtain ground water, surface water, soils and various other samples for subsequent analysis by the laboratory. This work is normally performed with modified Level D safety requirements (street clothes plus safety glasses, nitrile gloves and steel toed boots). These sampling projects occur at many larger industrial clients, MSWLFs and municipal sites throughout NYS. Most scope of work is mandated by the NYSDEC, USEPA or local County Agencies. Daily activities are almost exclusively outdoors 12 months out of the year and candidates must be willing to deal with changing conditions.

Responsibilities

About you:

  • Perform environmental sampling and observations within a heavy industrial setting following established protocols and safety practices.

  • Communicate all activities as directed in the facility to the onsite ALS Program Manager or designated client representative.

  • Requires detailed knowledge of all applicable sampling methods, equipment and techniques currently in use, site specific sampling protocols, ground water remediation systems, regulatory agency guidelines, water chemistry, field analytical methods, OSHA safety regulations, storm water management principles, ground water geology, hydrology, limnology, project planning and management and documentation required to properly complete a project.

  • Assist in the preparation of sample bottle kits.

  • Document all sampling and observation activities as required by the client and regulating authority.

  • Properly complete all required log sheets or log books a required.

  • Assist part/full time couriers with chain of custody, bottle preparation, and maps/directions for the completion of their assigned duties.

  • Prepare samples for shipping and delivery to ALS Sample Receiving.

  • Provide an accurate and completed chain of custody record of any sample in your possession.

  • Convey any ALS client requests or concerns to the Field Services Supervisor or appropriate Customer Service Representative.

  • Maintain routine vehicle maintenance, including fluid checks and/or replacements; exterior and interior cleaning of company vehicle.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Drivers license with clean driving record

  • 2 year Degree or substantial college coursework relating to Environmental Studies

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Desire to work outside every day

  • Ability to think on their feet

  • Must be insurable with a clean (no points) driver's license

  • Willingness to travel overnight for various projects within NYS approximately 2 weeks per quarter (all travel expenses paid for by ALS)

Physical Demands:

  • Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with co-workers, Department team members, management, and clients.

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs on a consistent basis (may request and use a dolly for situations requiring heavy loads).

  • Able to sit, drive, and walk for 100% of an 8 hour day.

  • Must be able to drive and get in and out of vehicle.

  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate vehicle, computer and other equipment.

  • Must have average vision and able to see to read reports and operate vehicle, office equipment.
