General Motors Fall 2024 Co-op/Intern Body Controls Sub-System Lead Specialist in Oshawa, Ontario

Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: The position does not require an employee to be onsite full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility, or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

The Role:

Do you have a passion for developing exciting customer-facing features? Consider a co-op/intern position with our GM family in VMEC (Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls) in the Body Controls space. The VMEC team is comprised of inclusive and diverse Agile software and hardware teams, where everyone has a voice in the conversation. Our development process translates customer requirements into designs, creates code, executes testing, and then integrates our solutions into reality. Our team’s software and hardware are demonstrated in vehicles today like the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Chevy Silverado EV.

The Body & Passive Safety SW Requirements team members are responsible for tasks and work throughout the entire vehicle development lifecycle including requirements definition, design and implementation, testing, and problem resolution develops some of General Motor’s most customer-facing features. This dynamic team member works closely with multi-functional stakeholders (system engineers, software developers, testers, etc.) to support innovative technology development that is used on internal combustion, electric, and autonomous vehicles, covering domain areas such as:

  • Vehicle Interior/Exterior Lighting

  • Side Entry Controls and Power Side Closures

  • Front and Rear Closures

  • Wipers and Washing

  • Occupant Protection

The selected Sub-System Lead Specialist Co-op/Intern will collaborate with one or more Sub-System Lead Specialists to support them in their sub-system responsibilities. This will involve both leading and supporting work items.

Responsibilities

As a Sub-System Lead Specialist Co-op/Intern in VMEC Body Controls, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Create and maintain requirements documents for applicable solutions or subsystems. These may take the form of Behavioral Test Specifications (BTS) or Sub-System Technical Specification (SSTS)

  • Lead or support root cause activities for sub-system related issues and translate solutions into new or revised requirements

  • Lead or support sub-system level Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEAs) and collaborate on System and Component FMEAs

  • Create and maintain Features, Stories, and/or Change Requests to manage requirements and specifications of sub-systems using change management tools (e.g. Jira)

  • Collaborate with Controls and Software Engineers to review software implementation ensuring compliance with requirements

  • Provide guidance and input for feature design verification plan by working with System and/or Feature Owners and Validation Engineers

Minimum Required Skills and Experience:

  • Enrolled in a Software/Controls/Systems/Electrical/Mechatronic Engineering degree program, or equivalent (Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, etc.)

  • 4th year or Master students (Preferred) but will consider qualified 3rd year students

  • Eligible to work full-time (40 hours per week) in Canada and for 4-month term starting September 2024

  • Ability to commute to Oshawa Site 1 day per week and either Oshawa or Markham site 2 days per week

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, combined with high attention to detail

  • Experience with writing, interpreting or managing requirements

  • Proficient oral and written communication skills

  • Instinct to drive conversations necessary to determine development tasks

  • Fundamental digital literacy including proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Strong partnership and teamwork skills, with demonstrated ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, take initiative, and be self-directed

  • Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability, and trust

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with Agile methodologies

  • Experience with software defined vehicles

  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama Connect, codebeamer, etc.)

  • Experience with work management tools such as JIRA/JIRA Align, Azure, IBM Rational Team Concert, etc.

  • Experience with automotive regulations or safety critical systems

  • Experience with calibration, software, and controls development

  • Familiarity with serial data communication protocols and tools such as CAN, LIN, and SPI

  • Experience with Microsoft Visio

  • Experience with Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) and Gherkin syntax

  • Knowledge of risk-assessment tools, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
