We are looking for an Upstream Process Development Science Manager to join us at our site in Nottingham.
We are looking for an Upstream Process Development Science Manager to join the Technical Support Group at Albumedix, now part of Sartorius. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a small close-knit team in upstream processing activities to produce recombinant protein products in small and pilot scale fermentation.
The overall team in the Technical Support Group consists of 15 professionals, and we are looking forward to shaping the future with you. The site is expanding so it’s a great time to join the team to further your career.
This position is available full-time. It is an onsite role in central Nottingham and the site is easy to get to, being a short walk from the trains station and tram stop.
Grow with us – Your Responsibilities
You will be responsible for management of the upstream process development team, training and mentoring staff in the group and when required in the wider organisation
You will also implement individual development plans, goal setting and performance review for the team
You will spend most of your time in the research laboratory to provide technical support for biopharmaceutical manufacturing of recombinant human albumin products, expert analysis of upstream process steps (shake -flask, seeds, main fermenter, cell separation) as well as new product development
You will lead upstream activities, perform troubleshooting, and process optimization using scale down fermentation studies, with subsequent implementation at production scale.
You will implement process improvements with respect to yield, efficiency and/or robustness
Identifying process optimisation activities, including Design of Experiments (DoE), performing scale down studies, and management of their implementation at large scale
Carrying out fermentation experiments using different scale benchtop bioreactors (2L) and pilot bioreactors (20-200L), this includes SIP, CIP, media preparation, seeding, inoculation, fermentation monitoring, microbial, chemical analysis and harvesting
Review of batch process data and contribute to continued process verification
Support technology transfer projects for cGMP manufacturing to other sites
Investigation and recommending of new technologies to use in upstream processes
In addition, you will provide fermentation support to cGMP cell bank testing, as well as generating albumin-based products for enhanced service projects and for application areas
You will prepare, test and release laboratory growth media, preparing reagents and buffers as necessary as well as interpret results, prepare data summaries and reports and recommend future actions
What will convince us
PhD degree in Fermentation, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biosciences, Life Sciences or related discipline with at least 5 years of relevant fermentation industry experience or MSc degree with at least 10 years relevant fermentation industry experience
Experience leading or supervising a small team would be essential
Experience in microbial fermentation, preferably yeast fermentation would be essential
Experience in aerobic fermentation would be desirable
Good understanding of fermentation, growth rates, process optimization, developing and scaling processes
Well-developed independent research skills, including statistical analysis, data analysis and Design of Experiments (DoE) for process optimisation using relevant software
Hands on experience with Sartorius fermenters such as Biostat B – DCU and D- DCU would be desirable
The ability to convey information clearly and effectively both in speaking and writing, to articulate goals and facilitate open discussions
The ability to inspire, motivate and lead the team by example
Foster a collaborative environment and encourage positive relationships
The ability to adapt to new situations and being open to change and manage transitions smoothly
