Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The NCCU Department of History offers undergraduate and graduate programs to train students to think critically, analyze information, and write clearly. Primary Purpose of Position

The position will provide instruction in African American history and U.S. history, with the ability to teach North Carolina history, as well as department service courses.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ability to teach courses in survey and upper-level African American/U.S. history, North Carolina history, and can place U.S. history within a larger global diasporic context. The ideal candidate will have: a research focus on pre-1900 African American history; the ability to direct research in African American history, Diaspora history, and U.S. history; excellent teaching skills; a commitment to advise and mentor students; and the ability to work with faculty and staff on efforts to retain students.

Minimum Education/Experience

Ph.D. in History from an accredited institution, ideally with a research focus on pre-1900 African American history.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Function Instructional

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

The candidate will provide instruction in African American history and U.S. history, with the ability to teach North Carolina history, as well as department service courses. The successful candidate will teach a 3/4 or 4/4 load, maintain an active research agenda, advise history majors, and serve on departmental, college, and university level committees.

Function Research

Conduct research to meet the requirements for promotion and add to the intellectual environment of the classroom and the university.

Function Instructional

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Serve on department, College of Arts Social Science and Humanities, and university committees. May also work with local, state, and national agencies and organizations.

Advising students at the undergraduate and graduate level.
